The Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS), is a non-profit Academic Research Body established in 1989 by the Hellenic Ministry of Education, Research and Religious Affairs to carry out applied Research and Development activity in the areas of telecommunications, computer systems and their applications in a variety of research themes. ICCS is linked to the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and is hosted by the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (SECE). 

In EuroVR, ICCS is represented by one of its research groups, the Intelligent System Engineering and Novel Simulations Environment (I-SENSE) Group, founded in 2002 by Dr. Angelos Amditis as a continuation of various smaller research groups already active from the early ‘90s.

VR in Science and Industry 2020: Call for VR infrastructure

We are pleased to announce the 4th conference “VR in Science and Industry” organized by the VRISI network on October 6th, 2020. This conference follows a series of successful events taking place every year since 2017 (2017 and 2018 in Aachen, 2019 in Sankt Augustin). The conference brings together end-users from science and industry, as well as solution providers, start-ups, and even individuals with a common interest in Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and more generally in interactive technology known as “XR”.

This year’s conference was going to be organized by the Chair of Computer Science Prof. Dr. Ulrich Lang at the University of Cologne. However, due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the activities of the university, the organizers decided to convert it into an all-digital conference experience. Therefore, “VR in Science and Industry” will be an online event only. While the previous physical events brought together between 80 and 100 experts in XR technologies, we expect for this year a larger audience, thanks to the virtualization of the conference and the opening to high-visibility international keynote
speakers.

EuroVR 2020 Conference: 1st Call for Contributions

We are pleased to announce the 17th EuroVR International Conference – EuroVR 2020 – planned on 25-27 November 2020 in Valencia, Spain. This conference follows a series of successful European VR/AR conferences taking place since 2004. The Immersive Neurotechnologies Lab (LabLENI) of the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV), Spain, is organizing the 2020 edition of this conference. 

 

The 17th EuroVR International Conference opens the 1st call for contributions.

1) Scientific track submissions can be:

  1. Full papers – either Long (14-20 pages) or Medium (8-12 pages) sizing – to be presented respectively as long or short talks during the scientific talk sessions: such submissions target original, unpublished papers documenting new research contributions, practices and experience, novel applications in VR or AV/AR/MR, or sound States of the Arts on challenging research questions in that field.
  2. Short papers (4-6 pages) to be presented during the scientific poster sessions: such submissions targets work in progress or other scientific contributions including ideas for unimplemented and/or unusual VR or AV/AR/MR systems. All scientific paper submissions are in the one column Springer format, and indicated paper lengths do not include references.

Project Description

Telexistence provides a means to complete maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) activities remotely that have the risk of causing physical injury and harm to the maintainer, or the by the same method, exceed the normal human capabilities of the individual with physical augmentation able to deal with increased loads without additional human manpower.  Combined with non-destructive testing (NDT) methods, this research seeks to develop novel methods for state-of-the-art remote virtual reality simulation for digital-twin robotic avatars.

Marco Sacco is a contributor for LAVAL VIRTUAL Magazine – VR/AR IN HEALTH

VR/AR IN HEALTH – LAVAL VIRTUAL Magazine 2020: an edition dedicated to the use of VR or AR in the healthcare industry, including well-being, handicap, and medicine. EuroVR President, Marco Sacco is one of the contributors of the new edition of Laval Virtual Magazine, with the article: “Smart and Human-Centered Living Environments lab”

“The use of VR/AR technologies has grown in many fields; one of the most important is the healthcare sector, in which the technologies are employed to support the rehabilitation process by making the interventions more engaging, controllable and ecological [1]. VR/AR applications can help people with motor or cognitive disabilities to continue their rehabilitation path at home, also after de-hospitalization, following a “ continuity of care” paradigm.”  (page 45)

 

The magazine had been presented, April 23 during the Laval Virtual World.

The Virtual Event was a success, structured as an island, where more than 6,500 visitors had the possibility to attend conferences, business meetings and the award ceremony.

PhD position: Virtual Reconstruction of the Acoustics of Paris’ Notre-Dame Cathedral

PhD Position opening for the reconstruction of the acoustic heritage of Notre-Dame Cathedral through historically informed simulations. The project is funded by the “Chantier CNRS Notre-Dame”, and will be carried out in collaboration with national and international research projects related to the Cathedral.

When we think of the great architectural achievements of history, such as the Gothic cathedrals, their importance is strongly linked to their acoustic environment. The acoustics of a heritage site is an intangible result of its construction and its tangible layout. We will explore how, through measurements, research, and virtual reconstructions, the acoustics of one of the most remarkable heritage spaces in France can be documented, reconstructed, and experienced. The focus is on the preservation and digital reconstruction of a heritage site, bringing it back from the ashes by examining its evolution and importance in history.

Haption: open position as Research Engineer

Our EuroVR member Haption has an open position as Research Engineer for their German office in Aachen.

Haption designs force-feedback devices for applications of Virtual Reality and robotics. Our products are used in industry for interacting with CAD models (assembly validation, maintenance planning) or for training manual skills, especially medical.

Position

This position is open as part of Haption’s participation to the collaborative research project DynamicHIPS, funded by the German federal ministry for education and research (BMBF). You will be in charge of the adaptation of a standard haptic device to the specific requirements of the project, including mechanical, electrical and software modifications and optimizations.
