Meeting the Network: Roy Damgrave
Meeting the Network, the series that takes you to meet the members of the association, today presents you Roy Damgrave.
Since 2008, Roy works as an assistant professor at the Laboratory of Design, Production, and Management, part of the Engineering Technology faculty of the University of Twente. He received his Ph.D. in 2017 on the subject ‘Enhancing the effectiveness of design tools in synthetic environments”.
Furthermore, Roy is a Research Affiliate of the International Academy for Production Engineering (CIRP) and is participating in the Industry 4.0 research at the Fraunhofer Project Center at the University of Twente. His research focus is on the use of Synthetic Environments and VR/AR in product development processes and on the development of Digital Twins in the Industry 4.0 context. This research has the aim of determining when, how, and why to use what kind of technology and how to implement it in line with the used methodology in a multi-stakeholder setting, in order to realize the most appropriate decision-making support tool.
What is a recent project in which you have participated?
Dr. Damgrave says: “I am one of the project leaders of Dutch NWO Perspective ‘Digital Twin’. The program develops methods to make accurate digital twins of these types of systems: virtual software versions that allow you to run simulations to predict, for example, how changes in the design affect performance, how control can be improved, or which part on which needs maintenance at the moment. Digital twins are still mostly based on static theoretical models that assume normal behavior. By linking these models to measurement data that indicate how the system actually functions and combining this data with artificial intelligence, the researchers make digital copies that continuously improve and adapt themselves. The research focuses on a number of exemplary systems provided by the Dutch high-tech companies involved in the program.”
What are your expectations, about the association and the future of the XR world?
Dr. Damgrave says: “At EuroXR Association I expect to share vision and experiences on the broad use AR/VR technologies. For the future I see an easier integration and use of XR, minimizing the efforts needed to use the technology while maximizing the effects. XR will sure become more and more an indispensable tool.”
