Keynotes
This year's Conference will host 4 keynote speeches.
Prof. Bernd Froehlich
Bernd Froehlich is a full professor of Computer Science at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. He is chair of the Virtual Reality and Visualization Research Group. He focuses on basic and applied research in multi-user virtual reality and 3D user interfaces, visualization and rendering algorithms for very large datasets as well as information visualization. After completing his PhD in computer science at the Technical University of Braunschweig, he worked at the German National Research Center for Information Technology (GMD) and was a research associate with the computer science department at Stanford University. He is a cofounder and member of the steering committee of the IEEE Symposium on 3D User Interfaces, chair of the steering committee of the IEEE Virtual Reality conference and received the 2008 Virtual Reality Technical Achievement Award. Froehlich serves as an associate editor of the journal Frontiers in Virtual Environments.
Keynote Speech
Prof. Froehlich will give a speech about "Social Virtual Reality". The talk will discuss multi-user VR, telepresence and some fundamental approaches to support collaboration.
Dr. Betty Mohler Tesch
Betty Mohler leads the independent research group, Space and Body Perception at the Max Planck Institutes for Biological Cybernetics and Intelligent Systems. Her groups aim is to investigate human perception and behavior using ecologically valid and immersive virtual reality (VR). At the same time we consider the implications of our scientific results for improving design specifications for VR software and technology. VR equipment enables our scientists to provide sensory stimulus in a controlled virtual world and to manipulate or alter sensory input that would not be possible in the real world. More specifically, we are able to specifically manipulate the visual body, the contents of the virtual world, and the sensory stimulus (visual, vestibular, kinesthetic, tactile, and auditory) while performing or viewing actions (performed by self or by others). We are mostly interesting in manipulating these features in real-time and are able to do this through fast VR capture and rendering technology. Our group focuses on two specific areas: space and body perception. Space perception is the ability to experience the world in three dimensions and the distances to and between objects in the world. Body perception is the experience we have of our physical selves (and parts of ourselves, i.e. hands, legs, torso). In our research group we focus especially on the perception of the size, shape and form of our surrounding world and our bodies. Further we focus on the interaction between our perception of the spatial attributes of our bodily selves and the spatial perception of the surrounding visual world. Our methods typically involve measuring human performance in complex everyday tasks, i.e. spatial estimates, action execution and recognition (i.e. reaching, walking, communication). We have found that people rapidly adapt their visual estimates about their own bodies (to longer arms, bigger hands, bigger overall bodies) and the surrounding visual environment. In addition, contrary to what one might think, even healthy people have distortions in how they perceive their bodies and the relationship between their bodies and the surrounding world. In recent years we have been developing our technology so that it can be used for clinical applications, specifically with stroke patients, with eating disorder patients and hopefully soon with amputee patients.
Keynote Speech
Dr. Betty Mohler will present the Importance of Avatars for Body Perception, during her keynote.
Prof. Maria Roussou
Prof. Maria Roussou is an Assistant Professor in Interactive Systems (Human-Computer Interaction, Virtual Reality, Computer Games) at the Department of Informatics & Telecommunications, University of Athens. She founded in 2003 and co-directs makebelieve, an experience design and consulting company. Previously, she established (in 1998) and directed (1998-2003) the Virtual Reality Department at the Foundation of the Hellenic World, where she was responsible for setting up the immersive projection-based VR exhibits and managing the research, design and development of the VR programs and related visitor experiences. Her contact with Virtual Reality began in 1993 when she was fortunate to land at the Electronic Visualization Laboratory in Chicago, where she spent most of the nineties designing and evaluating virtual environments for the CAVE®. Maria is Chair of the Greek ACM SIGCHI Professional Chapter (since 2011) and the recipient of the 2013 Tartessos Award for her contribution in Digital Heritage and Virtual Archaeology.
Keynote Speech
Prof. Roussou will be talking about designing the "User-Centered VR Experience" and she will touch on trends (from various disciplines) that penetrate the design and development of virtual environments, in view of the imminent wave of consumer friendly VR technology.
